π₯ Meet Your Student Executive β Avery Gertner, District 1 President.
Each week weβll feature one of our AHSRA Student Executives in our Why I Rodeo series β sharing their stories, experiences, and what rodeo means to them.
Weβre starting with Avery Gertner, your 2025β2026 District 1 Student President and a six-year member of AHSRA.
How did you first get involved with AHSRA?
I first got involved through AHSRA mainly because my family were all members in the past and knew what a great association it was. Majority of the kids I had junior rodeoed with were now migrating towards AHSRA. I have been a member for 6 years.
What events do you compete in?
I compete in barrel racing, breakaway roping and team roping. In junior high I ribbon roped and tied goats also (until I had a wreck and can no longer do this). My dad ropes so he built my foundation which has been really neat. Iβve always loved the roping events because itβs not just about what horse youβre on and thereβs so many other aspects you have to take note of. I love barrel racing too, thereβs nothing quite like sending a good one down the alley!
What inspired you to step into the role of D1 Student President?
I have now been on the AHSRA board for 5 years and have gained so much from it. Iβve coordinated events, public spoke, attended board meetings and so much more. Being on the board has taught me so much, leadership being a huge part. I love collaborating on things whether it be inside or outside of the arena.
What do you love most about being part of AHSRA?
Simply the people you meet and the environment you learn and compete in. No one wants to see you succeed more than the high school rodeo parents that are in the muddy arena sorting calves and lining poles!
Why is AHSRA important for youth?
There are SO many positive outcomes. Thereβs clinics, good stock, appropriate set ups and so much help and knowledge everywhere you go. Canβt figure out why your ropes hitting the dirt? Chances are there is a CFR qualifier standing in the same arena you are.

π€ Thank you, Avery, for your time, leadership, and everything you do for District 1 and AHSRA!

π€ Meet Your 2025β2026 District 1 High School Executive!
These are the voices of District 1 β the volunteers who pour their hearts, hours, and weekends into making high school rodeo happen across southern Alberta.
Theyβre not sitting in offices β theyβre in the arena, in the dust, and in the middle of the action. These are the people making sure every event and every rodeo day runs smoothly, safely, and fairly for our members.
Theyβre parents, competitors, mentors, and leaders β all working together to make sure every Alberta High School Rodeo member (Grades 9β12) gets the chance to do what they love. πͺ
π Join us in thanking this powerhouse team for the hundreds of volunteer hours they dedicate each season!
πΎ District 1 spans across the southern region of Alberta, and weβre always ready to welcome new members to the arena.
π₯ Membership for the 2026 spring season is open until February 1st!
